Hi all, last week I shared my method for making the torso’s and legs for Art-Scale Marines. In case you missed it you should certainly check it out here. Once you’ve finished with that come back here and learn how I do arms and see the almost finished Marines in the flesh.
OK so you’ve finished reading about torso’s and my reasoning for even wanting to try this madness right? Good. Without further ado I’ll begin explaining how I do arms for these giants.
Step one is chop the arm across the forearm. I found that it’s easiest to slice neatly through the arm so that you can use the sculpted details to re-align the pieces at step two. If you cut it at the wrist you risk not being able to line up the arm which is an issue with those holding bolters. Once you’ve cut the arms into pieces carefully glue a small square of plasticard in between the two pieces taking care to line up those lines and using superglue. I found that my lack of patience and desire to make sure the bolters crossed their chests nicely meant I did both arms, glued them in place with the gun all at once. This meant that I got a good fit but in hindsight might cause some issues later on. I guess you could neatly unstick them afterwards so I would probably do the same thing again.
Once the glue is dry you can sculpt the forearm details. Basically just a strip of green stuff wrapped around the arm and smoothed out with a rubber tipped sculpting tool. If you don’t own one then get one they’re amazing. If you’re feeling confident you can replicate the plate lines in your work to detail the lines. Basically the goal here is to extend the arms by around 1.5mm in length and about 2mm in diameter to beef out the limbs so they match the chunkier legs. This makes the model seem less bottom heavy.
After that’s all dry you can add elbow pads and wrist ridges at either end of the cured forearms. This should be done in keeping with the armour style obviously. for MKIV you wouldn’t add wrist joins but would extend the work from the previous paragraph to cover the overlapping panels. Again I find that using a little too much is easier than trying to blend in extra later. If you do run short on a panel do not despair though, making small circular motions should smooth the extra into the original and if that doesn’t work then just gently press in some detail work to obscure it.
That’s the arms complete. The next thing is Astartes pattern slippers. Yes that’s right I want them to be even taller! Stick a square of plasticard onto their soles and trim it down before smoothing a small amount of putty around the foot to make it actually deep enough for a size 18 (guess) foot to fit in it.
After that it’s just a case of applying heads or helmets and the basic marine is finished. The next steps are finding and applying accessories and additional weapons. They’re Grey Hunters so they each need a bolt-pistol, bolter and close combat weapon. Plus you can never have enough grenades, ammo and knives! Then there will be an element of wolfing up the legs and adding pelts to cover pieces I made a mess of! Next time you see these guys they should be painted so stay tuned! -Mark
