Rogue Stars my first thoughts

So on the last day of 2016 I recieved my copy of Rogue Stars, which is published by Osprey Games at first I thought it looked like a Sci-Fi port of Frostgrave but it seems I was wrong.

Rogue Stars is a character-based science fiction skirmish wargame, where players command crews of bounty hunters, space pirates, merchants, prospectors, smugglers, mercenary outfits, planetary police and other such shady factions from the fringes of galactic civilisation. Crews can vary in size, typically from four to six, and the character and crew creation systems allow for practically any concept to be built. Detailed environmental rules that include options for flora, fauna, gravity, dangerous terrain and atmosphere, and scenario design rules that ensure that missions are varied and demand adaptation and cunning on the parts of the combatants, make practically any encounter possible. Run contraband tech to rebel fighters on an ocean world while hunted by an alien kill-team or hunt down a research vessel and fight zero-gravity boarding actions in the cold depths of space – whatever you can imagine, you can do.

So on first read through it looks really good everything is target number orientated, using D20s with four possible results a spectacular fail, fail, pass or a spectacular pass, each brings its own rewards and benefits! Each player has a set amount of xp to spend on charactors and equipment, the range of equipment is fairly massive so you should be able to produce many individual gangs to play against even if specialising in the same style of play.

The rule book has several examples of crews for you to use each following a different theme, of which there are quite a few including mercenaries, pirates and star cops, each crew has its own set of starting talents which can be selected and paid for when creating a crew.

There are a selection of miniatures available from North Star but not unlike Frostgrave I can see there being many people using a vasy selection of different miniatures, personally I am thinking of using a squad of Algoryn to begin with.

Unlike other games where if you now the rules well you wont suffer to much if you leave your rule book at home for a gaming session, you really are going to need your rulebook almost every time you play, unless you just play a very basic game, as there are tables galore in the rulebook, from loot to environmental effects, you shoot in a ship miss your target and your round goes through the windscreen……what going to happen next?

This is a game like frostgrave was, a great start with plenty of potential and hopefully many more expansions in the works already!
